• L’Etape @ 1 Dec @ Jindabyne - Graham Cockerton Tom Green, James Thornton & Dom Zumbo all rode well at the L’Etape.

TOUR OF BRIGHT - 30 NOV-2 DEC

• 30 Nov - Porepunkah Individual Time Trial @ 14k. A brisk wind greeted the peloton along the Ovens River from Bright towards Porepunkah & return.

  • A grade - Conor Tarlington finished 75th from 90 starters in 20min 25secs (@ 3-28)

  • B grade - Declan Jones finished 31st from 41 starters in 20min 27secs (@ 2-48)

• 1 Dec - Bright to Tawonga Gap Summit Road Race @ 100k. A difficult day in the cycling office with very warm conditions, another brisk tailwind out towards Myrtleford, then a right turn out over the Rosewhite climb towards the Kiewa Valley and onto the Tawonga Gap climb.

  • A grade - Conor was in the peloton to the 90k mark at the first pass through Tawonga, but was unshipped (along with numerous others) to the climb to Bogong then caught the autobus to the Tawonga finish.

  • B grade - Declan got in the early break of the day & picked up some handy sprint classification points, then joined the autobus to the finish up Tawonga Gap .

• 2 Dec - Bright to Mount Hotham Summit Road Race @ 55k. The stage started cloudy & wet with a flat ride towards Harrietville then up the 30k Mount Hotham climb.

  • A grade - Conor rode well then joined the autobus after The Meg wall

  • B grade - Declan again went hunting for Sprint classification points into Harrietville then joined the autobus for the Mount Hotham summit.

TOUR OF BRIGHT - 30 Nov-2 Dec

Conor Tarlington & Declan Jones line up for one of the most popular tours on the Victorian racing calendar. So what to expect … Friday is a short, flat 13.5k time trial around Porepunkah which is just long enough to give a guide to overall general classification intentions. Saturday things get interesting over 100k, with a flat ride out along the Ovens Valley towards Myrtleford, then a right hand turn over the relatively easy Rosewhite Climb towards the Kiewa Valley. The finish is up the difficult Tawonga Gap which will shred the general classification. Sunday is the queen stage from Bright over just 55k, the flat run in towards Harrietville, then the finish atop the super tough Mt Hotham ski station.

SILVER LININGS CHARITY RIDE - CANBERRA TO MELBOURNE

BiciSport Happy Wheels supported the Silver Linings charity ride from 22 October to the Albury stage finish on 24 October. The course was far from easy with the Monday featuring Canberra Gunning over 100k, with solid climbing over 40k from Jugiong to Harden. The charity ride raised money for ovarian cancer research. Next year the ride goes around Tasmania.

LISE BENJAMIN - GOLD IN TIME TRIAL & TEAM SPRINT, BRONZE IN SPRINT

MIKE SMITH - GOLD IN TEAM SPRINT & SILVER in SPRINT

• UCI Masters Track Cycling World Championships @ Los Angeles @ 6-13 October

  • Individual Time Trial @ 8 Oct

    • W60-64 - Lise Benjamin took Gold (and a new World Record in 39.498secs (second was 41.359secs & third 41.487secs)

    • M45-49 - Mike Smith rode the second fastest first lap @ 19.601secs and finished 26th (report to come)

  • Sprint @ Oct 10-11

    • M45-49 - Mike Smith rode a ‘pb’ in Sydney just before he departed for LA, so the chances of a good result in the Sprint were high. Mike qualified 6th in qualifying (200m in 11.028secs), but them matched into the Gold medal round against Ainars Kiksis (Latvia). Mike took an outstanding Silver medal.

    • W55+ - Lise Benjamin qualified second fastest (in 12.927secs) then took the Bronze medal

  • Team Sprint @ 12-13 Oct

    • W65+ - Lise Benjamin teamed up with Anna Whitten to win the Team Sprint in 38.830secs

    • M45-54 - Mike Smith took the Gold with Gavin White & Daniel Rickard in 48.196secs

• Heffron Park @ 9 Oct - Heffron Park kicked off the 33rd summer season in fine style with big fields in every grade. Conor Tarlington went top 10 in a hectic sprint with prominent rides by Stewart Campbell & Graham Cockerton

• National Capital Tour (Canberra) @ 13-14 Oct - Conor Tarlington (Div 1) & Declan Jones (Div 2) both had a tough day at the Canberra office. The stage 1 time trial was 16k alongside the Majura Freeway and was super fast. The road stage used much of the same roads as the time trial then finished with the Mt Majura climb (similar to the climb out of Akuna Bay). Sunday was a Criterium around the Australian Institute of Sport.

• Newcastle Kooragang @ 13 Oct - Both Ruth Strapp & Rhett Hall were both a peloton finish.

• Sprint Grand Prix @ DGV @ 29 Sept - Lise Benjamin & Mike Smith both featured in final preparation for the World Masters Championships. Mike Smith set a blistering personal best in the 200m Sprint Qualiying of 10.9secs.

• David Browne (BiciSport Happy Wheels) together with Paul Craft rode the first 45k (Wisemans Ferry to Wisemans Ferry) of the proposed Wisemans Ferry to Calga Road Race. The ride itself started with the Wisemans Ferry-St Albans ferry crossing then meandered towards the village of St Albans. Crossing the river at St Albans and another right hand turn back towards Wisemans Ferry (this time from the other side of the river) was greeted with some 8.0k of Roubaix quality dirt .. hardly a car in sight for a sensational ride.

Wisemans to Calga gets interesting from the outset with picturesque countryside straight from Wisemans Ferry, then 8.0k of dirt just after St Albans plus the tough climb to Mangrove Mountain and a traditional finish at Calga

* Tarlington meets the Stelvio @ 12 Sept - Seemingly if you haven’t done the Stelvio climb in Italy this year then you must be the only BiciSport person who hasn’t with Brett Tarlington, Frank Signor, Melissa & Peter Budd, David Cooper, Brad Mills & Ian Grainger all giving it a crack

* Amy’s Grand Fondo @ 16 Sept - Peter & Melissa Budd started and Peter finished 21st for his 8th consecutive qualifying medal to the UCI World Masters Championships (to be held in Poland in 2019). Conditions at Amy’s was cold, wet & windy and there was even snow on the side of the road in parts.   

* Hunter Valley Masters @ 16 Sept - Ruth Strapp took the C grade win from 15 starters & earned a promotion to B grade. Rhett Hall was a peloton finish in A grade.

The road from Wisemans Ferry to St Albans is the best kept secret in cycling. Very little motor traffic and just out of St Albans is this delightful panorama (picture taken on 10 Sept). This road will feature in a new event on the NSW road racing calendar in mid May 2019 that includes the St Albans “Hell of the North” dirt section very much in the classic Paris Roubaix tradition. Planning for this new event is now well underway.

Bormio at the base of the Stelvio climb in Italy remains the place to stay with both the Gavia & Mortirolo climbs as an added bonus

* UCI World Masters Road Championships @ Varese Italy @ 2 Sept - Both Graeme Cocks & Peter Budd represented BiciSport in Varese. Peter has had a stellar road season to date but an untimely puncture at the 80k mark (of a 135k Masters Championship) didn't help proceedings.

*  RAW Track @ DGV @ 7 Sept - David Browne (BiciSport Happy Wheels) is currently leads (just) in the Division 2 pointscore at RAW at DGV with one round remaining. Exciting ... hear the crowd scream !

*  Newcastle @ 9 Sept - Ruth Strapp took 3rd in C grade at Hunter Valley Masters (from 25 starters). Rhett Hall rode well in A grade for a peloton finish. Both Ruth & Rhett are going to the NSW Masters Championships in Orange in two weeks time.

*  Gunning Weekend @ 8-9 Sept - Randolph Baral took an excellent second in the Saturday ITT for Masters 4-5 from 12 starters. Sunday offered the Road Races over the challenging Gunning road circuit to Breadalbane & return. The wind was up and it was a very tough day out. Div 1 over 140k - Conor Tarlington rode well for 15th for a peloton finish considering the windy conditions. Div 3 over 90k - Declan Jones took a fine 7th in a close bunch sprint.

Mortirolo Pass (Italy) outside Bormio @ 26 August - Peter Budd at the summit

Stelvio Pass (Italy) @ 26 August - an elevation of 2760 metres, 27 kilometres of climbing, 45 hairpins, the odd dark tunnel, the odd tourist motorcyclist, the hint of snow at any point in time, not to mention the road seems to hang off a cliff ... well done to Melissa Budd for getting to the Stelvio summit

*  Bormio (Italy) @ 25-26 August - Peter & Melissa Budd and Frank Signor landed in Bormio for their Dolomite pass challenges. Peter rode up the Mortirolo Pass (the traditional Giro approach via the Pantani Monument), then onto the Gavia Pass (again via the traditional Giro approach made famous by Andy Hampsten in the snow in 1988). Frank, Peter & Melissa then combined to tackle the Stelvio just outside Bormio.    

TOUR DE BELLO - 30 AUGUST TO 2 SEPTEMBER

Alex Simmons (BiciSport) hosted the second Tour De Bello with a happy peloton of some 15 riders. The daily program was a mixture of the Promised Land (yes, there is such a place), Kalang River & the Alpe D'Kalang climb, North Arm, Urunga, Mylestom and Sawtell. The final stage was up the Alpe de Dorrigo. Thanks Alex for a great four days & we look forward to the Tour de Bello 19.

News Shorts - 27 August

A speedy recovery to Tony Holland (Harlequin Wheelmen) and the other 4 cyclists needlessly injured last week as they descended down McCarrs Creek Road from the Ku Ring Gai Chase National Park towards Church Point. Its difficult to comprehend the selfish mindset that spawned such an outrageously poor act towards innocent cyclists going about their own business. What drives an idiot to build a makeshift speed bump clearly designed to injure individuals. This isn't the first time cyclists have witnessed poor anti cyclist behaviour along McCarrs Creek Rd - its well known that the "Cyclist Warning" signs are regularly removed or vandalised, tacks and nails regularly litter the McCarrs descent (as late as only last week) and now a highly dangerous speed bump designed to hurt individuals.

*  Cootamundra Weekend @ 25-26 Aug - Conor Tarlington (BiciSport Happy Wheels) contested the Cootamundra Weekend series of CyclingNSW road handicaps. The new course was outstanding, over great roads and some truly picturesque scenery. Saturday was over 100k & Conor finished an excellent 25th. Sunday was over 65k and Conor finished 11th in the front group contesting the win.

*  Eire for Kirsty Flanagan - long time BiciSport rider Kirsty Flanagan has now settled permanently in Ireland and has joined a local club with the Irish Cycling Federation. Best wishes.  

*  Wagga to Albury Road Race @ 29 July - Peter Budd (BiciSport Happy Wheels) started in Group 3 (of 4) in this classic strong man aussie handicap. As Peter reports it was a really tough race with heavy crosswinds the whole event. There was never a place to get a good sit and relax. Group 2 caught Group 3 some 5k before the town of Culcairn, and both Group 2&3 then caught the Group 4 leaders approximately 5k on the other side of Culcairn. Savage crosswinds split the front group again towards Albury and Peter found himself in no man's land. Ben Dyball gave the other Group 1 riders an education in carving through a crosswind on open country roads and easily took the victory.

BICISPORT MEMBER NEWS - NOWRA TTT EDITION

*  RAW Track @ DGV @ 20 July - David Browne currently leads Division 2 at RAW at DGV with 8 rounds remaining.

*  DGV 100 lapper - Graham Cockerton is showing good form with twice first to finish in the fast group at the DGV 100 lapper on a Wednesday night.

*  Ride for Robbie Road Race @ Nowra Airport @ 22 July - Conor Tarlington finished an excellent 19th (from 43 starters) for a peleton finish in Division 1. This is Conor's best result in State level competition 

*  Nowra Team Time Trial Championship @ 21 July - The Friday weather conditions were less than pleasant, but Saturday dawned much more agreeable. with much softer wind conditions. BiciSport fielded 5 teams to the Championships. Championship Masters 180+ - Peter Budd, Mike Lawson & Peter Verhoeven took the Bronze medal in 1hr 5min (from 7 teams) but it was a very tight result with the Silver medal and 4th place just 3 seconds away. Peter V had a wheel problem and the service saw 30 seconds given away. Sassafras Challenge Men - Stewart Campbell, Tom Green, Rhett Hall & Graham Cockerton took 3rd (from 13 teams) in 1hr 00min. Conor Tarlington, Will Peters, Patrixck Conway & Dom Zumbo took 5th in 1hr 2min. David Browne, Frank Signor, Noel LaRose & Peter Davis took 13th in 1hr 24min.
