Pepsi-Alba Cucine-Fanini Pro Cycling Team (USA then Italy) - 1987-89

Nothing beats having Pope John Paul in the team photo & based on the meagre Pepsi Fanini race results even Papal support somehow wasn’t enough. In many respects it was a miracle they lasted 3 years as their only claim to fame was riding the 1989 Tour of Italy. Team bikes were Italian Alan frames … probably the worst aluminium frameset ever made (they looked great, just didn’t work).

Originally registered in USA (in 1987) then onto Italy in 1988 & 89. Ditto for the riders with numerous US riders on the team roster in 1987, then no US riders in the following years when the Italians took complete control. A somewhat fractured team roster - Gibi Baronchelli (headed for retirement after a magnificent career), John Eustice (USA), Roberto Gaggioli (team sprinter) and the one the only Mario Cipollini.
