Teka Professional Cycling Team (Spain) - 1976-90

Cycling sponsorship in Europe was in the 1980’s totally addicted to kitchens, kitchens and more kitchens - be it Del Tongo, SCIC or Salvarani. Teka was more of the same in Spanish kitchens & baths, the groupsets Campagnolo & Mavic, framesets were Alan (Alan’s swayed more than the Eiffel Tower in Paris). Team manager was Jose Linares.

The Teka team was led by Marino Lejarreta who won the 1982 Tour of Spain. Marino was with Teka from 1980-82 and his best years were still to come at teams SEAT & ONCE. Other team mates were a classy lot but surprisingly the team wins were really a rarity. Eduardo Chozas (climber), Reimund Dietzen (all rounder), Noel Dejonckheere (Belgian sprinter - who passed away recently), Regis Clere (French all rounder), Mario Chiesa, Fred Echave and the English super sprinter Malcolm Elliott

The ‘new’ Alan frameset was certainly a magical design - it did look great. Clean lines and stunning lug work created a great looking bike. The trouble was both front fork and bottom bracket sway was chronic. Under heavy load (especially in the big chain wheel) the frameset bent seriously out of shape and this resulted in chronic chain drag on the front gear derailieur. The framesets looked stunning but they just didn’t really work (what a shame)
