Carrera Pro Cycling Team (Italy) - 1984-96

Carrera was Italian jeans with numerous supporting sponsors in Tassoni, Peugeot, Vagabond & Tonello. The Peugeot sponsorship was a hang over courtesy of Stephen Roche. Bikes were originally Battaglin (Italian), then towards the end it morphed into Carrera (again Italian). Group sets were Campagnolo, team shoes were Gaerne (Italian), team clothing was Nalini & drugs were most definitely EPO and lots of it.

Team victories were endless - be it Grand Tours, Classics or World Road Championships. Roberto Visentini won the ‘86 Giro, then Roche won the Grand Triple in ‘87 with Romandie, Giro, Tour & World Road Championships (only Merckx had done that previously). Claudio Chiappucci went podium at the ‘90 Tour de France. Marco Pantani joined the team in 1994 and that was very much a drug fueled journey. The team had more stars than the night sky in Acacio Da Silva, Giovanni Battaglin, Bruno Leali, Urs Zimmermann, Erich Maechler, Guido Bontempi, Rolf Sorenson, Djamolidine Abduzhaparov, Mario Chiesa, Ivan Ghirotto and Fabio Roscioli. Most were named in a 2000 court case regarding EPO use and team history was put in the trash can.

Carrera stopped sponsorship in 1996 and sponsorship then went to the supermarket chain Mercatone Uno in 1997. The Pantani “era” really began in earnest and it all ended tragically for Marco and professional cycling generally. It was a dark period as pro cycling resembled something akin to street theatre blended with athletic karaoke.
