BICISPORT MEMBER NEWS - RUTH STRAPP IN POZNAN, POLAND

  • Ruth Strapp reports from the UCI World Gran Fondo Championships …. having just returned from the Gran Fondo World Championship in Poznan (Poland), this trip would not have been possible without the fantastic support from BiciSport, one of my local training groups, sponsorship from the company Redtek as well as family, friends and colleagues, for which I am extremely grateful.

  • After qualifying in Bathurst, I did 12 weeks solid preparation, training 6 days a week- 11-12 hours per week ride time incorporating weekly racing at Club and State level. Lucky for me, I was able to have a training program written up by one of the best local riders around Newcastle in Sam Hill.

  • The training program included a couple of 60-90min sessions a week on the indoor smart trainer holding specified power to work aerobic and anaerobic systems. Generally sprint training early in the week after a rest day, then endurance and racing on the weekends. It was a bit of a juggle with work and kids with some very early morning sessions but I really enjoyed training hard. Despite not getting results in racing (I think because I was frequently fatigued) I could feel and see the training paying off.

  • In Poznan, I was able to check out most of the course before the event which was advantageous. In the early part of the 151km race I felt pretty rubbish, it was 32 degrees and was still getting over the long travel. For the most part though, I felt the training had prepared me. Despite taking a third bidon, I ran out of water as I missed the bidon at the water station and had to ask dropped riders from other age cats for hand outs. In spite of not having experience in races even near to the distance of 150km, being flat was a big plus for this fairly solid rider.

  • Coming into the sprint, I wasn’t terribly well positioned amongst some pretty experienced women. A lot of yelling and tram tracks 1&1/2 m over a ledge to my left, didn’t aid my confidence. Finally, positioned on the left of the peloton there was an ambulance within 150m of the finish line, meaning I didn’t even get out of the saddle for the sprint. In the end I finished 24th out of 48 starters in my age group. A fantastic experience and great to be able to share some of it Melissa and Peter Budd.
