BICISPORT MEMBER NEWS

  • Ken Dinnerville Handicap @ Gunning @ 21 July - A great win by Peter Budd (BiciSport Happy Wheels) from a bunch sprint of some 30 riders. Peter has a renowned uphill sprint and so it proved. Well done Peter (and Melissa for that matter).

  • Calga Road Race @ 21 July - Both Ruth Strapp & Eric Dole featured. A beautiful morning, fresh, with a light breeze out of Peats Ridge. An excellent turnout by several clubs with both Eric & Ruth in C grade with a bunch of 30+ riders. Eric took second in the KOM (shades of Thib Pinot winning on the Tourmalet ?). On the third lap 2 riders got away in a breakaway and the winner stayed away until the finish. Eric escaped on Blood Hill with 2 other riders chasing down the breakaway. The French Housewives Favourite (being Eric) finished 4th overall and continued with his prominent media profile. Ruth finished in the peloton and is currently the leader of the Womens Series.

  • RAW Track @ DGV - Davide van der Browne continues to impress (chasing a start in the Ghent 6)

BICISPORT DERNY PROJECT NOW COMPLETE

After something like 24 months the end is nigh with the BiciSport derny restoration project. Originally there were 8 very much unloved and battered dernys residing in a rusting heap at DGV Velodrome. The threat to simply bin then at the nearest tip was very real. Cleaned up, repainted in mandatory Derny-Ferrari red, Olympic decals attached and now finally rebirthed. It took a while but a job well done and thanks to John Crouchley (BiciSport) for making it all happen.

The journey was not simple as the Belgian designed dernys had 2 stroke engines, and the traditional oil-fuel mix in 2 stroke engines was the cause of much grief (after 20 years of neglect the engines simply wouldn’t fire up). The team looked at rebuilding the 2 stroke engines using a new synthetic 2 stroke fuel (way too costly), maybe installing electric engines (very politically correct but just plain silly) and finally it was agreed to install a new 4 stroke engine (easy to operate and running on standard 98 premium fuel). The “new” BiciSport derny (pictured below) is easy to ride and has a top speed of 70kph. Much fun to be had ….

BiciSport Derny @ 22 July - designed & built by Belgian derny manufacturer Arie Simon (the Simon decal is behind the engine) and the 4 stroke engine gives an excellent top speed of 70kph.

Dernys in action at the Velodrome - Each rider is allocated a derny & the “bigger/fatter” the derny driver the better to assist with slipstreaming (thin drivers need not apply). Clothing rules also apply for derny drivers (drivers are not permitted to intentionally layer up). Hence, “natural layering” the preferred option.

BiciSport derny @ 22 July - Ken Edwards gives the BiciSport derny a track test around an Allambie Heights car park. Braking is similar to a bicycle with agile handling characteristics. The petrol tank is under the handelbars and the engine uses standard 98 premium petrol. The derny prefers flatter roads but can climb moderate hills if required.

Bordeaux Paris 1968 - Belgian Herman Van Springal races behind his designated team derny for the 600k race. The first 300k of the Bordeaux Paris race was ridden as a steady group ride, then riders stopped briefly. The last 300k was then raced “full gas” behind the derny - each rider had their own derny. The derny machines were notoriously unreliable (no surprises there !) and the spare team derny on the right of this picture was there just in case something went wrong. Note - the “bigger” the derny driver the better !
